How I Can Help

On Site Performing Arts Broadcast Program – KUSP is the radio broadcasting partner for many of the Central Coast’s greatest musical organizations. Our broadcasts of events such as the Monterey Jazz Festival, Carmel Bach Festival, and the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music are possible as a result of gifts to KUSP’s On Site Performing Arts Broadcast Program. These funds support the performing artists and recording engineers, and pay for the acquisition and upkeep of the necessary equipment.

In 2005, a grant to this program made it possible for KUSP to purchase a well-equipped remote broadcasting unit once belonging to KFRC in San Francisco. This mobile remote broadcasting vehicle (KUSP’s third since the Performing Arts Program began in the 1970’s) travels to local concert venues and either broadcasts the concerts live or records then for replay at a later date. Through this work, KUSP is able to share the wonderful local and visiting talent with listeners on the Central Coast while supporting the work of these arts organizations.

As part of the On Site Performing Arts Broadcast Program, KUSP recently launched “On the KUSP,” a project that aims to further expand the scope of our musical outreach activities and to provide our listeners with locally produced live performances that complement the diverse mix of musical genres available on KUSP. “On the KUSP” has completed several of these recordings and the first on-air broadcast, selections from a Baaba Maal concert at the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz, aired on August 18, 2006.

Support for the On Site Performing Arts Broadcast Program in 2007-08 is provided in part by the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County and the Fund for the 21st Century and the Patricia J. Boles Fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County. We need additional funding to continue the program at its present level, including the further development of “On the KUSP.”

Drive for Digitization HD Radio logo  – KUSP has nearly completed a multi-year, $228,000 project to digitize our broadcast signal and upgrade our on-line services. Find all the details here.

Emergency Preparedness – Like many radio stations, KUSP maintains stand-by generators at its most important broadcast sites so that we can stay on the air if electrical power is interrupted. The stand-by generator at our Santa Cruz studio, installed over 20 years ago, is no longer operating reliably and must be replaced. We have applied for a matching grant from a program of the U.S. Department of Commerce that supports emergency preparedness projects at public radio stations. Since we started raising money for the new generator, as of April 21, we have brought in $4,500 – leaving $5,500 to go to make the match and complete the project.

Environmental Science Classroom Education Program – KUSP is partnering with HSBC to distribute 90 Seconds, a new book by Life on the Planet contributor Milos Radakovich containing his popular science pieces, to schools in our Central Coast listening area. The book and audio version are accompanied by a lesson and enrichment plan so teachers can easily incorporate Milos’s enthusiastic approach to environmental science education into their classroom curriculum. Copies of 90 Seconds and the classroom materials are now available to area teachers; get more information here.

Live Music in the KUSP Studios – KUSP hosts a large number of quality visiting musicians each year. Recently these works have begun to be collected in a manner that will allow for the issue of these performances on CD. Efforts are also underway to restore and secure distribution rights to our collection of recordings from as far back as 1973. KUSP’s first CD containing live music recordings is now available as a thank you gift for donors giving $80 and above. We are now seeking support for production of Volume II of the series, which we hope to release later this year.

YouthtopiaFounded in 2002, the Youthtopia program is a way for local teens to learn about careers in radio, and to research and create program content of interest to other teens and their parents. In 2006, Youthtopia radio programs covered topics such as self-esteem, substance abuse, homelessness, fashion, politics and peer pressure. The initial funding for Youthtopia was provided by Sound Partners for Community Health, a program of the Benton Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Support has yet to be secured for the upcoming year.

General Operating Funds – These funds support our core operating budget and are always needed! Besides providing for the usual operational overhead (rent, salaries, electricity), these funds are essential to maintaining the extensive network of technical equipment necessary for the operation of a radio station. KUSP’s broadcasting facilities extend up and down the Central Coast, from Los Gatos south as far as San Luis Obispo County. Without funding first for general operating support, we cannot do any of the important projects listed above!

How you can support these projects:
