Tonight's edition of Giant Steps includes an interview with Bassist and Composer Marcus Shelby, who brings a 13-piece orchestra to the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz this Friday.  We also celebrate the birthdays of 5 musicians:  pianist/composer Thelonious Monk (10/10/17); drummer/bandleader Art Blakey (10/11/19); drummer Billy Higgins (10/11/36); trumpeter/bandleader Lester Bowie (10/11/41); and saxophone giant Pharoah Sanders (10/13/40).
