PLAYLIST FOR GIANT STEPS
Wednesday, September 6, 2000
Tonight's edition of the program honors John Coltrane, the guiding light
of Giant Steps. As part of KUSP's series of broadcasts of recordings
from last weekend's jazz festivals in Chicago and Detroit, we include the
David Murray Octet paying tribute to Coltrane and his music. We also
focus on Elvin Jones, Coltrane's drummer for 5 years, who celebrates his
73rd birthday this Saturday, September 9th. That same day, tenor
saxophonist Sonny Rollins turns 70, and we include his collaborations with
Elvin Jones and John Coltrane tonight.
