Giant Steps

Today's program continues John Coltrane month on Giant Steps, and focuses on 3 related musicians. Tommy Flannagan, who performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival 5 days ago, played piano on several Coltrane sessions in the '50s, and has collaborated with many of Coltrane's sidemen. Sonny Rollins, who celebrated his 69th birthday yesterday, rivaled Coltrane as top hard-bop tenor sax player in the late '50s. Elvin Jones, who turns 72 tomorrow, was drummer in the classic Coltrane quartet of the 1960s.
