PLAYLIST FOR GIANT STEPS
Wednesday, June 18, 2003

Tonight's program continues last week's tribute to the composer Calvin Massey, born January 11, 1928, died October 25, 1972.  Cal Massey influenced many Philadelphia jazz musicians from the 1950s until his death.  He introduced John Coltrane to McCoy Tyner, and was also close with Jimmy Garrison, Reggie Workman, Lee Morgan, Archie Shepp, and others.  We include performances by Tyner and Coltrane, including their work with Eric Dolphy.  We then focus on Eric Dolphy, a gifted composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist.  Dolphy was born June 20, 1928, dying suddenly on June 29, 1964. Tonight's program includes performances by Dolphy on alto saxophone (a), bass clarinet (b), and flute (f).
