PLAYLIST FOR GIANT STEPS
Wednesday, June 11, 2003
Tonight's program pays tribute to the composer Calvin Massey, born January
11, 1928, died October 25, 1972. Cal Massey influenced many Philadelphia
jazz musicians from the 1950s until his death. He introduced John
Coltrane to McCoy Tyner, and was also close with Jimmy Garrison, Reggie
Workman, Lee Morgan, Archie Shepp, and others. Massey also played
trumpet, and made one record as a leader, in 1961. He was a talented
arranger, providing arrangements for John Coltrane's Africa/Brass
and for several Archie Shepp albums. His son Zane is a gifted saxophonist.
Tonight's program includes 15 performances of 13 Massey compositions, as
well as 3 dedications to Massey.
