PLAYLIST FOR GIANT STEPS
Wednesday, March 14, 2001

Tonight's edition of Giant Steps celebrates the birthdays of 2 giants of modern music.  Drummer Roy Haynes turned 75 on March 13; a mainstay of the bebop revolution of the late 1940s, he has been active on the jazz scene ever since.  We hear him with just a few of the many jazz stars who recorded with him.  Roy continues to tour and record today, energetically leading his own small groups.  Pianist Cecil Taylor turns 72 on March 15.  In a class by himself, Cecil's compositions and performances are demanding for his fellow musicians and listeners alike, yet offer unique and rich rewards.
