PLAYLIST FOR GIANT STEPS Wednesday, February 17, 1999
Tonight’s edition of GIANT STEPS pays tribute to Jaki Byard, who died
this past week at age 76. His long career spanned many decades and
styles of music, from stride to avant garde. Primarily a pianist, he
was accomplished on many reed and brass instruments as well as all sorts
of percussion instruments. Tonight’s program includes examples of his
work on saxophone, drums, vibes, celeste, and electric piano. Most of
his recordings feature the acoustic piano, and tonight we hear him in
solo, duet, and trio settings, as well as with a variety of horn
players, including some of the most forward-looking musicians of the
1960’s.
