PLAYLIST FOR GIANT STEPS
Wednesday, February 2, 2000

Today’s edition of Giant Steps features pianist McCoy Tyner, who will perform solo at Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz February 7th.  He is in the midst of a 2-week residency at Yoshi’s jazz club in Oakland; after a week leading a quintet, he is leading a trio with Stanley Clarke and Al Foster.  A gifted composer and soloist, he grew up in Philadelphia and rose to prominence as part of John Coltrane’s quartet 1960-65.  He has led his own groups since then, and still tours and records frequently, at age 61.  Tonight’s program includes solo, trio, small group, and big band selections.
