PLAYLIST FOR GIANT STEPS Wednesday, December 28, 1998:
Tonight's program was a tribute to drummer Tony Williams, who was born
December 12, 1945, and died suddenly in early 1997, only 51 years old.
Tony rose to prominence while in his teens, performing and recording
with the likes of Sam Rivers and Jackie McLean before joining Miles
Davis in 1963. He was an integral part of Miles's great quintet of
1963-68, with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and Ron Carter. He
composed many tunes for that group as well as for his own sessions as
leader. He was a pioneer of fusion music in the late 60's and 70's,
before returning to acoustic music in the 80's and 90's. He made a big
mark in jazz right from the start, and has influenced many musicians.
He is clearly missed.
