Giant Steps

          This week's edition makes note of the fact that a number of great jazz drummers were born in early January: Kenny Clarke (1/9/14), Ronald Shannon Jackson (1/12/40), Grady Tate (1/14/32), Gene Krupa (1/15/09). Today's program includes several pieces featuring the percussion of Barry Altschul, born 56 years ago today. Next week I (host Howard Feldstein) will program Tuesday evening's KUSP jazz program "Outfront/Outback," and will feature the work of Max Roach, who celebrates his 75th birthday on January 10. I'll combine that with a Martin Luther King birthday tribute.
