Fire Information
Last Update: Sunday 8/23/09, 6:30 pm

Sunday August 23, CAL FIRE decleared that the Lockheed Fire near Bonny Doon was 100% contained, after containing the remaining open fire line in the southern region. The fire which started August 12, burned a total of 7,817 acres.

While unburned islands of vegetation continue to burn inside the perimeter, threat levels remain low to Bonny Doon and Swanton residents. However, residents should remain alert to possible fire activity. If anyone witnesses a large amount of smoke production in the burn area, they should call 831-335-0378.

Lingering smoke will be present as fire crews continue to fully control the incident. Additionally, residents need to be cautious when walking in or near the burned area. Smoldering brush and stumps may be found and are still dangerous. Heavy mop-up is still continuing for all other areas of the fire.

A damage assessment has been completed. Structures damaged/destroyed include 4 seasonal cabins. 13 outbuildings have been destroyed and 1 damaged.

There are 819 personnel assigned to the fire. 8 fire crews with 50 engines and 5 bulldozers are being used to fight the fire.

Costs of the blaze have grown to 25.5 million dollars.

The fire started Wednesday evening, August 12, two miles south of the Lockheed Martin Space Systems facility on Empire Grade in Santa Cruz County.
