Fire Investigators from the San Mateo / Santa Cruz Unit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL Fire) have determined the cause of the Trabing which started on Friday, June 20, 2008. The fire was caused by a vehicles exhaust distributing hot carbon particulate material on to the roadside grass. The fire spread rapidly to the adjoining vegetation. The investigators completed a thorough investigation to confirm all factual findings and ruled out any other probable cause.

CAL Fire investigators would like to remind all vehicle owners to please maintain your vehicle to a safe operating condition. Periodic maintenance should include an engine tune up and an inspection of the vehicle exhaust system.

The Trabing Fire has now been 100% contained according to CAL Fire. At least 10 residences and 10 out buildings were lost.

The fire was first reported about 2 p.m. Friday along Highway 1 between Buena Vista and Mar Monte just north of Watsonville.
